Features
Using applied patent technology (Vector Routing Algorithm) the Edge2WAN appliances are able to balance network traffic across multiple WAN connections, with full session persistence.
Unlike many other multi-WAN appliances which do not handle session persistence very well, the Edge2WAN appliances can balance traffic and ensure that your applications continue to work the way they should.
XRoads Networks is the leader in developing new WAN balancing technologies and this is why so many customers that purchase other multi-WAN appliances end up coming back to buy an Edge2WAN.

WAN Load Balancing
Balance up to 4x 10/100 Internet connections via either T1, Cable, DSL, Wireless. Improve performance and reliability in the event of a link failure or high latency.
- Inteligent Load Balancing (using our own Vector Routing Algorithm): The Edge2WAN appliance uses advnaced metrics to determine when a link is not performing, including multi-hop outage detection. Using these metrics the Edge2WAN also automatically calculates which links to use when forwarding new sessions across each link for optimal load balancing.
- Drop-In Installation: The Edge2WAN appliance has built-in proxy and/or bridge mode which allows this WAN balancer to be inserted into an existing network with no IP address changes. Simply connect the Edge2WAN between the LAN/firewall and the WAN/broadband router.
- Best Path Routing: Unique to the Edge2WAN appliaces is our BPR algoithm which ensures that critical network traffic ALWAYS takes the fastest path by calculating latency, packet loss, and jitter on the fly. Our Best Path Routing technology alos automatically creates SLA graphs which the IT manager can view in order to see how each link is performing.
- Increase Performance: Increase download speeds when multiple users are spread across two or more WAN links which provides additional bandwidth across multiple sessions.
- Increase Reliability: In the event of an outage, the Edge2WAN appliance automatically switches over to the backup links. When the link becomes usable again acess is fully restored automatically.
- Multi-Session Accelerator Client (FREE added benefit): Our DLA client works with our Edge2WAN appliances to split downloads into multiple sessions which can improve performance, specifically when mirrored servers are available.
ActiveDNS Failover (unique to most other multi-wan appliances)
Only the Edge2WAN platforms include the ActiveDNS system. ActiveDNS provides a built-in dynamic DNS server within the Edge2WAN appliances. This server is automatically updated when the link status changes within an appliance which means that the Edge2WAN can automatically change inbound server connections on the fly in the event of a network outage which translates to 99.999% uptime for your servers.
Traffic Shaping
Prioritize applications and guarantee bandwidth for end-users or critical services like VoIP, CRM, web-based systems. Create bandwidth policies based on the following criteria:
- IP Address / Network
- Application Type
- Source / Destination
- QoS Level
- and MAC
Bandwidth can be defined based on shared or single group delegation. Each policy will automatically generate usage statistics which can be used for end-user or department billing purposes.
Network Visibility
See what is happening within the network using the Edge platforms built-in network reporting tools. Understand which applications end-users are accessing and how much bandwidth each is consuming. Use this reporting to determine how to best proceed with shaping the traffic to optimize network performance and eliminate congestion.
End-User Bandwidth Control
Beyond application shaping, a network administrator can use the Edge platform to shape individual end-user traffic. Create user groups and apply rate-limits to each in order to guarantee bandwidth throughput and ensure that no single group and/or user can slow down the rest of the network.
MAC-Based User Binding (Internet Service Providers)
Many ISPs utilize this binding method to ensure that only authorized users are able to access network bandwidth. The MAC-binding can also be used to tie a user to a specific IP address and thus guarantee certain bandwidth rates. User statistics can also be generated on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis for each customer.
Dynamic Prioritization
With 12 levels of prioritization within its shaping engine the Edge platform has the ability to dynamically assign new application sessions to a given level based on administrative settings. By changing the queuing for each level the Edge platform is able to effect application responsiveness and smooth packet streams.
P2P / IM Bandwidth Control
Ensure bandwidth resources are being used effectively without the possibility of a small group of users slowing down the network for everyone else. The Edge includes our FlowTraker module which automatically classifies P2P and other application traffic. Once classified this traffic can be prioritized or blocked.
DiffServ / ToS Marking
A standard method for marking packets enables various devices from different manufacturers to communicate preferences from end-to-end. The Edge platform fully supports these preferences and can re-mark packets as they leave the system.
