FAQs

What is a dual-wan or multi-wan appliance?

A dual-wan appliance provides enhanced network load balancing features that provide increased throughput and download speeds, high availability, redundancy, and 99.999% reliability for the cost of an expensive broadband connection.

Can I dounble my Internet speed?

With our link load balancing you can increase your network access to the Internet as users are balanced between the ISP links. For example, if one user is downloading traffic through the WAN1 (1.5Mbps) another user can begin a download via WAN2 (1.5Mbps), thus doubling the overall network speed to the Internet. All of this is done automatically without the end-users making any changes to their existing network connections.

Does the ISP link type matter?

No, you can use the same ISP for each connection or two or more ISPs. The Edge2WAN supports T1, DSL, Cable, Wireless, Frame Relay and more. Any connection type, any speed, from any service provider. The E2W will automatically detect the link status and add it to its Vector Routing algorithm.

What security features are included?

The Edge2WAN includes stateful layer-7 packet inspection, IDS, anti-virus, web content filtering, VPN tunnel termination, and much more. No other security solution in this market has more features and functionality.

What is the Netsweeper web content filtering?

The Netsweeper web content filtering system provides an enterprise class web filter for organizations of all sizes. With the ability to select over 75 categories, automated email usage alerts, and the ability to view reports in real-time the Netsweeper content filtering system is second to none.

Does the Edge2WAN automatically failover?

Absolutely, if Internet connectivity is important to your organization, then the Edge2WAN platform is a must. In the event of a link outage detection the E2W platform will automatically failover all connectivity to the remaining active link(s). When the downed link returns to active state the E2W will automatically begin balancing traffic once again.

Does the Edge2WAN load balancing traffic?

The Edge2WAN can be placed in either load balanced, or backup mode. When in load balanced mode the E2W will balance end-user sessions between WAN links, thus increasing available bandwidth to the network and improving end-user connectivity.

Can I route applications through different links?

Yes, force VoIP traffic through WAN2 and web traffic through WAN1 to improve performance of VoIP calls. Force all traffic to critical remote websites through a specific WAN link in order to ensure session persistence across multiple site logins.

Can I load balance incoming server connections?

Yes, with our ActiveDNS service customers can setup control their own DNS settings which will automatically change to balance incoming server connections and only provide active WAN IPs in the event of a network failure. The ActiveDNS service can provide instant 1 second failover for inbound server connections.

What is the Vector Routing Algorithm?

This is the technology which separates the Edge2WAN appliance from all other competing dual-WAN firewalls. Vector Routing is a highly advanced routing algorithm which uses multiple metrics, including latency, packet loss, bandwidth usage, session usage, jitter, link speed and administrative weights to determine how new network sessions are load balanced. This is a far superior algorithm as comapred to round robin and other basic routing algorithms.

What is Best Path Routing?

Unique to the Edge2WAN appliances is our Best Path Routing technology. BPR is used to setup full path monitoring for critical remote networks. This full path testing provides SLA data in the form of graphs for the network administrator, and metric data to the Vector Routing Algorithm in order to assist in making routing decisions for these critical networks.

What is traffic shaping?

Traffic shaping is the ability to control how applications are prioritized as they traverse the appliance and how bandwidth is segmented on a per user and/or per application basis.

How does the EdgeXL improve application performance?

Unlike some other traffic shaping devices which only slow down network connections the EdgeXL is able to segment application bandwidth and thus provide true segmentation of network resources.

How does the EdgeXL reduce P2P and unwanted application usage?

By utilizing a process known as session limiting the EdgeXL is able to ensure that P2P applications do not open hundreds of connections to other users for file downloads. This prevents any one user from becoming a file download server.

What is multi-WAN load balancing?

This is the ability to speed up the network by balancing sessions across multiple Internet links. The EdgeXL is able to bind DSL, Cable, wireless, T1, DS3, Satellite, and metro Ethernet connections to increase throughput and reliability.

Does the EdgeXL provide redundancy in the event my primary WAN link fails?

Yes, when multiple Internet links are bound within the EdgeXL unit, it is able to automatically failover from one link to the other without any manual intervention.

How many users can the EdgeXL handle?

There are several platforms available; however the EdgeXL-50S is able to actively manage up to 5000 users.

How much bandwidth can the EdgeXL handle?

There are several platforms available; however the EdgeXL-50S is able to handle up to 100Mbps of throughput in both directions.

How many applications does the EdgeXL automatically classify?

Currently the EdgeXL is able to automatically classify over 200 appliances and the more applications are continuously being added.

Can the EdgeXL appliance prioritize VoIP traffic?

Yes, in fact the EdgeXL has a specific module designed to automatically classify and prioritize VoIP traffic. Simply enable the module and allocate the amount of guaranteed bandwidth for VoIP services.
